Nourish the Soul – You Are Enough

1 Samuel 17:38–40

“Then Saul gave David his own armor – a bronze helmet and a coat of mail. David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. “I can’t go in these,” he protested to Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off again. He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.”

This one feels personal.

As I sit down to write Nourish the Soul, I find myself relating to David in a way I didn’t expect. Not in boldness—but in hesitation.

Because if I’m honest…
I don’t feel like the “right” person for this.

I’m not a teacher. I’m a student of God’s Word.
I don’t always feel equipped.
And at times, I don’t even feel worthy of the calling.

And yet—here I am.

David stood in front of Saul, being offered armor that looked the part. Armor that made sense to everyone else. But it wasn’t what God had prepared him in.

So he took it off.

And I can’t help but wonder if sometimes we hesitate not because God hasn’t called us…
but because we’re trying to step into that calling wearing someone else’s armor.

More polished.
More knowledgeable.
More “qualified.”

But God didn’t ask David to become someone else before stepping onto the battlefield.
He simply asked him to go—with what he already had.

A sling.
Five stones.
And a heart that trusted Him.

That’s the part I’m holding onto.

I don’t have to be the most eloquent.
I don’t have to have all the answers.
I don’t have to feel fully ready.

I just have to be willing.

Willing to step out in faith.
Willing to use the gifts God has already placed in my hands.
Willing to keep my eyes off the “Goliaths” and fixed on giving glory to God.

Because in the end, this was never about David proving himself.
It was about God showing His power.

And maybe that’s the invitation for me… and for you too.

To show up, just as we are.
To trust that He is enough.
And to let Him be the One who does the work.

A gentle reminder today:
You do not have to wear what was made for someone else. Walk faithfully with what God has given you. In His hands, it is more than enough.
