Proverbs 17:27
“A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered.”
Proverbs 21:23
“Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.”
Psalm 141:3
“Take control of what I say, O Lord, and guard my lips.”
Have you ever replayed a conversation in your mind, wishing you could take back something you said?
Most of us have. Sometimes the words come out in frustration. Sometimes they’re spoken too quickly. Sometimes we speak simply because silence feels uncomfortable. Yet once words leave our mouths, we can’t call them back.
Scripture reminds us that wisdom is not found in always having something to say. Often, wisdom is found in knowing when to remain silent.
Proverbs tells us that a wise person uses few words and guards their tongue. David understood that this wasn’t something he could accomplish by willpower alone. That’s why he prayed, “Take control of what I say, O Lord, and guard my lips.” He recognized that the heart and the mouth are deeply connected, and he invited God to shape both.
One simple tool that has helped me is the acronym THINK. Before speaking, I pause and ask:
- T – Is it True?
- H – Is it Helpful?
- I – Is it Inspiring?
- N – Is it Necessary?
- K – Is it Kind?
Imagine how many misunderstandings could be avoided if we paused long enough to filter our words through these five questions. Our homes would be gentler. Our friendships stronger. Our workplaces more peaceful. Our witness for Christ brighter.
Of course, we won’t do this perfectly. There will still be moments when we speak too quickly or too sharply. But each day gives us another opportunity to invite the Holy Spirit to transform not only our words but also the heart from which those words flow.
The goal isn’t to speak less simply for the sake of silence. The goal is to speak in a way that reflects Jesus—words that are truthful, gracious, timely, and filled with love.
Today, before you respond, before you react, before you offer your opinion, pause for just a moment.
Ask the Lord to guard your lips.
You may find that the most powerful words you’ll speak today are the ones He helps you hold back.
My prayer is that the Lord would give me a heart that is slow to react and quick to seek His wisdom. May my words be true, helpful, encouraging, necessary, and kind. May the conversations I have today point others toward the grace of Christ, and may my speech reflect the One who has spoken life into me.
I’d love to hear from you! Whether a recipe brought a little joy to your table, a reflection encouraged you, or a Nourish the Soul post spoke to your heart, your thoughts are always welcome here. Nourish and Nibble is about more than what we put on our plates—it’s about sharing life, faith, nourishment, and a little grace along the way. So pull up a chair and join the conversation. I’m so glad you’re here.
