Portuguese Fish Supper
Recipe by Rachael Ray // Week in a Day
First Impressions
This recipe came together easily and felt like the kind of meal that looks much more impressive than the effort it requires. Between the colorful tomato broth, hearty garbanzo beans, kale, and flaky fish, it was a beautiful dish to bring to the table. I could immediately see why Rachael Ray is so good at creating meals with layers of flavor that still feel approachable for a weeknight dinner.
Flavor, Simplicity & Modifications
One of my favorite things about this recipe was how simple it was to prepare. The sauce comes together quickly, and once the fish is added, dinner is on the table in no time.
I made one notable modification: instead of cod, I used Sablefish (Black Cod). It was absolutely delicious—rich, buttery, and incredibly flaky. The fish paired wonderfully with the smoky chorizo and tomato-based broth. The combination of flavors felt hearty, comforting, and well-balanced.
Unfortunately, my Favorite Critic—who, might I remind everyone, was the one who chose this recipe—wasn’t a big fan. That’s one of the fun things about trying new recipes: sometimes the person who picks it ends up liking it the least!
What I Loved
- The ease of preparation.
- The beautiful balance of smoky, savory, and fresh flavors.
- The combination of fish, beans, and greens all in one dish.
- The buttery texture of the sablefish.
- Having crusty bread available to soak up the flavorful broth.
What I Would Keep the Same Next Time
I would absolutely use sablefish again. The rich flavor and delicate texture worked beautifully in this recipe. I would also keep the chorizo, kale, garbanzo beans, and tomato broth exactly as written because they created a wonderful foundation of flavor.
What I Might Try Differently
The only thing I might experiment with is serving the fish separately over the broth rather than cooking it directly in the sauce. This would help preserve the delicate texture of the sablefish and make for a slightly more elegant presentation.
I might also add a squeeze of fresh lemon at the table for a little brightness.
Final Thoughts
While this recipe may not have earned a spot on my Favorite Critic’s repeat-request list, I genuinely enjoyed it. The preparation was simple, the flavors were thoughtfully layered, and the sablefish made it feel a little special. For anyone looking for a nourishing, comforting meal that comes together without much fuss, this Portuguese Fish Supper is worth trying.
Not every recipe becomes a family favorite, but sometimes it’s fun simply to explore new flavors and revisit old cookbooks that still have plenty of delicious stories left to tell. 🍲🐟💛
