Zephaniah 3:17
“For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With His love, He will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”
There is something so tender about the words, “He will take delight in you with gladness.”
We know that God loves us. We say it, we sing about it, and we read it throughout Scripture. But do we ever stop to consider that God delights in us?
To delight in someone is more than simply loving them. There is joy in delight. There is pleasure in their presence. And Zephaniah tells us that this is how God looks upon His people—with gladness.
Think about that for a moment. You are God’s creation. He formed you with intention and purpose, and He takes delight in what He has made. So often we look at ourselves and immediately notice what we would like to change. We see our imperfections, our mistakes, or the places where we think we fall short. But God looks upon His creation with a very different perspective.
From the beginning, when God looked upon what He had created, He called it good. There was pleasure in His creation. And here in Zephaniah, we are given an even more personal picture: He delights in His people with gladness.
Then the verse gives us this beautiful image: “He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”
What an incredible thought. There is something deeply personal and beautiful about knowing that the One who created us also takes pleasure in His creation. And perhaps that truth should change the way we look at ourselves.
Maybe we need to become a little less critical of what God created.
Instead of looking first at everything we believe needs fixing, perhaps we can learn to see ourselves more through the eyes of our Creator—with gratitude for how He intentionally made us and a desire to honor Him with what He has given us.
You are His creation. You are loved by Him. And He delights in you.
My prayer is that I would truly receive these words. That I would see myself with greater gratitude, remembering that I am the work of a loving Creator, and carry with me the beautiful truth that God takes delight in me and rejoices over me with joyful songs.
