“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” — Romans 5:8 (NLT)

Have you ever received a gift that made you stop and think, I don’t deserve this?

That feeling gives us just a small glimpse of the gospel. Every good gift we receive points us to the greatest gift ever given—Jesus Christ. Unlike any earthly gift, this one could never be earned. No amount of good works or effort could make us worthy of it. It is a gift of grace, offered freely to all who place their faith in Him.

Romans 5:8 reminds us that God’s love wasn’t based on our goodness or our ability to earn it. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. He didn’t wait for us to clean ourselves up or prove ourselves worthy. He met us in our brokenness and offered us the greatest gift we could ever receive.

The apostle Paul explains the beauty of that gift in 2 Corinthians 5:21: “For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.”

This is the greatest exchange in history.

Jesus lived the only perfectly sinless life. Every thought, every word, every action was in complete obedience to the Father. Because of that, He alone was qualified to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins. He took upon Himself the punishment that we deserved so that we could receive the righteousness that only He deserved.

Pastor and author Chuck Swindoll beautifully captured this truth when he wrote:

“The life that He lived qualified Him as undeserving of the death that He died, and the death He died now qualifies us for the life that He lived.”

Jesus took our guilt and gave us His righteousness. He bore our shame so we could be called sons and daughters of God. He accepted the punishment we earned so we could receive the grace we could never earn.

When we truly understand that, it changes the way we live.

We no longer strive to prove our worth because our worth has already been settled at the cross. We don’t obey God to earn His love—we obey because we have already received it. We don’t have to carry the weight of our past because Christ already carried it for us.

Today, if you’ve been battling shame, regret, or the feeling that you’ll never be enough, remember this: your standing before God isn’t based on your performance. It’s based entirely on the finished work of Jesus Christ.

The cross wasn’t just where your sins were forgiven—it was where your identity was forever changed. Because of Jesus, you are forgiven, made righteous before God, and invited to walk in the new life He purchased for you.

My prayer is that I would never lose the wonder of this incredible gift. That I walk each day with humility, gratitude, and confidence, knowing that because of Christ I have been made right with God. May my life reflect the grace I have so freely received, bringing honor and glory to the One who gave everything for me.
