1 Samuel 16:7
“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Don’t judge by his appearance or height… the Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’”
I’ve been slowly walking through First Samuel lately, and this verse stopped me.
It’s one of the most quoted passages in Christian circles… and yet, it still finds a way to gently confront the heart.
If I’m honest, I felt convicted.
There have been moments—subtle, quiet ones—where I’ve placed value on someone based on appearance. Not intentionally, not proudly… but it happened. And I imagine I’m not alone in that.
We often say, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
And it’s true—our preferences, our perceptions, our experiences all shape what we see.
But that’s also the problem.
Because our vision is limited.
It’s filtered.
It’s often missing context.
We see a moment… God sees the whole story.
We see the outside… God sees the heart.
And how often do we misjudge simply because we don’t have the full picture?
This verse isn’t just a reminder—it’s an invitation.
To pause.
To look deeper.
To soften the way we see others.
And even more than that… to bring our own hearts before Him.
“Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and restore in me the joy of Your salvation.”
A simple prayer.
An honest one.
Because the goal isn’t perfection—it’s transformation.
May we become people who see a little more like He does.
With grace.
With humility.
With hearts that are being made new.
